The school year following the “Crisis at Central High” of 1957 – 1958 is considered by many to be the untold story of the Little Rock Desegration Crisis, as well as the second chapter. In the fall of the 1958 school year due to remarkable circumstances, all four high schools in Little Rock were closed to avoid integration again. More than 3,600 black and white students were shut out of their high schools, with no education available from their public school district for one entire school year. Students and teachers from Hall High, Central High, Horace Mann and Little Rock Technical School all suffered under this decision.
Parents were scrambling to find schools for their teenagers. Makeshift classes were being taught on television. Many students transferred to schools in other cities and states, living with family members and friends. Strangely, after a brief respite, the football programs continued.
With special thanks to those who have and continue to support The Lost Year Project, co-produced by Sandra Hubbard and Dr. Sondra Gordy. The project includes this documentary, a website, and Dr. Sondra Gordy’s upcoming book, Finding the Lost Year. Hubbard has also produced a documentary about the Women’s Emergency Committee to Open Our Schools, entitled The Giants Wore White Gloves.
Funding for this project was provided by: The Arkansas Humanities Council; the National Endowment for the Humanities; the Lu Hardin President’s Fund at the University of Central Arkansas Foundation; the Fred Darragh Foundation; the Bridge Fund; the Arkansas Community Foundation; and donations from friends and supporters of The Lost Year Project.
This documentary is dedicated to all lost year classmates and teachers.
