It is a majestic structure anchored in Missouri's Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, rising boldly over the great Mississippi River.

At 630 feet tall, the Gateway Arch, commonly referred to as the St. Louis Arch, is the tallest national monument in the United States. Despite the many pitfalls encountered along the way and the dangers involved in its construction, the arch's deceptively simple design resulted in a breathtaking commemoration of America's expansion westward. Designed by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen, the arch's unique orthotropic plan made it possible to create two stairways and a revolutionary tram system inside, allowing visitors to enjoy the spectacular views from the apex of the arch.
